The iPhone App Brooklyn to Babylon: Shinobi Ninja Attacks!

Shinobi Ninja Attacks is like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles meets Double Dragon, with drumsticks and guitars instead of katanas and nunchucks. While the band's music is bumping in the background, players choose their favorite Shinobi Ninja member and fight their way through the streets of Brooklyn,
subway cars, and a massive line at the mythical Club Babylon to rock a show. Along the way players beat up evil hipsters, knock down douchebags from the Jersey Shore, and subdue angry subway riders, as they earn points and treasure.

- performer/songwriter/producer Cisco Adler announces "Beat the Remix," a remix contest to all aspiring MCs and DJs launching Tuesday, August 31st. Any contestant up to the challenge will have three weeks to pull out all the stops to "beat the remix" and come up with a track killer enough to one-up DJ duo Miami Ski Team's version.

"One of the most exciting aspects of this game is seeing who's next in line and what raw talents are brewing in the basement. Beat The Remix is a chance for all the aspiring producers and DJs out there to show us what they've got," Adler said.

Only one talented musician will have the remix impressive enough to be chosen by Adler as being the best of the best. Along with bragging rights, he or she will receive a stoke pack from Oakley and New Era. Runners up won't be forgotten- second and third prize get some goods too. Contest details and assets for the editing process can be found on bit.ly/BeatTheRemix. Entries must be in by Tuesday, September 21st at 12:00pm Pacific time. Check for updates on the judging process at CiscoAdlerPresents.com and Twitter.com/MrCiscoAdler.

Sasha Ring’s work under his Apparat moniker has always been evolving; over three albums on the Shitkatapult label and the collaborative full lengths with Ellen Allien and Modeselektor as Moderat on Bpitch Control, he’s surprised a lot of listeners with his output. Confined to little or no definitive style his music has always been in a constant state of metamorphosis, simultaneously breaching new waters and staying true to his unique spirit of musical openness and his obvious passion for sound design.

Aptly joking that his DJ-KiCKs selection reflects his style to “not really have a style” it’s evident that Ring is more than aware that his contribution to the series might look “intelligent” on paper - with the tracklist aligning variant artists like Oval, Autechre, Ripperton and Thom Yorke – but given his recent tour at the start of the year, it’s simply a representation of where he’s at in terms of modern music.

“I didn’t want to make this kind of "smart" mix, that’s eclectic and sounds like it’s done "on purpose;" but I need to do different things to keep myself motivated,” Ring explains. “At first I wanted to make a collection of influences, all kinds of old songs, but then sometimes with those mixes it’s hard to keep some kind of flow and they’re just not very easy to listen to, so I ended up using good new music; music that almost gave me hope that there’s more out there than boring minimal techno.”

The Apparat contribution is as stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden, with Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his personality and his brave take on ‘club’ music. With an incredibly prevalent talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn – whose “Miniluv” provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice Baumel’s “Sub” – and Ramadanman’s “Tempest” - whose melody all but dissipates at the optimum moment - layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from across an array of genres from Autechre’s percussive white noise to Oval’s erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o’s “Intervall.”

The mix also includes two exclusive Apparat tracks, as well as an unreleased track from Telefon Tel Aviv, all of which will be released in full track versions on an EP later this year. The gorgeous album-opener "Circles" builds off of highly textured string plucks and rattling percussion into a propulsive track, complete with shimmering guitar and a melancholy vocal. Surfacing near the end of the mix, the DJ-Kicks exclusive track "Sayulita" exemplifies Apparat's skill for mixing the tactile with the intangible. Swaths of swirling melody shroud a backing percussion track so clear the listener feels that they might be in the same room as the player.

Their latest album, Only Revolutions, has been nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize. Prior shortlist nominees for the prestigious UK award include Florence and the Machine, Radiohead, and Franz Ferdinand. Only Revolutions will be released in the US on September 21. The album will be available at select indie record stores through Junketboy Distribution. Go to www.thinkindie.com (click on ThinkIndie Physical) for more information.

Produced by Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), mixed by Andy Wallace (Coldplay, Nirvana, Faith No More), and featuring the orchestration of multi Grammy-winning composer David Campbell, Only Revolutions is the fifth release from biffy clyro. The follow-up to 2007’s break through release Puzzle, Only Revolutions was released in the UK on November 9, 2009 to chart success and critical acclaim. It is certified platinum in the UK, and the Sunday Times, Kerrang and Q each gave it four stars, with The Guardian declaring, “ their songs pack a punch, but are full of light, shade and sophistication.” The first UK single off the album, “Mountains,” is a Top 5 radio hit that has sold over 100,000 copies. Current single “Bubbles,” (which features Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age playing additional guitar on the track) is the fifth consecutive single from Only Revolutions to enter the UK Top 40 chart.

The Scottish trio formed in 1995 and quickly began honing their unique sound, a mind-boggling mix of off-kilter tempos, itchy, unpredictable guitars, soulful choruses and feral screams. Years of relentless touring built a dedicated army of followers and turned biffy clyro into one of the most celebrated live bands in the UK– they’ve shared the stage with Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Linkin Park, opened a colossal Wembley Stadium show with Muse and became the first band ever to play in the Houses of Parliament. They’ve begun to win over US fans as well, on recent tours with Queens of the Stone Age, Editors, and Manchester Orchestra.

The long-gestating Tupac Shakur movie may finally begin production this November, now that director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) has brought on Oscar-nominated screenwriters Stephen J. Rivele and Chris Wilkinson to pen a new script. Wilkinson tells Vulture that the film, originally written in a documentary style, will not be a biopic. Instead, it will focus on Tupac's last day, and flash back on the four years that preceded his still-unsolved shooting death in Las Vegas. "He was just beginning to shed that anger and look for a purer voice ... He was in the process of changing himself, and entering a new phase of his life," says Rivele, who previously teamed with Wilkinson to script Ali and Nixon. "He saw the contradiction between the musical persona of 'Thug Life,' and his essential nature as a gentle, sensitive person. And that was partly responsible for his murder: He was not a gangster, but the people around him were."

All Eyez on Tupac: The Life and Times of the Hip-Hop Great
Like Notorious, the biopic that starred first-time actor Jamal Woolard as Biggie, Fuqua hopes to cast an unknown to portray Tupac. (Anthony Mackey, who would later appear in The Hurt Locker, played Shakur in Notorious.) Plans for the movie began in 2007, when Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, sold the rights.

This Nashville group’s 2010 full length debut is not the kind of album that is going to blow your hair back. The tone of that last sentence will echo through the rest of the review, so get ready for a poor review.

Let’s start with this: I really hope the guys in this band are rude to waitresses or don’t believe in evolution or something, because I would hate to give a review like this to a bunch of stellar dudes.

How would you describe what this band sounds like? If you were me, you might say: “It sounds like the singer of the Kings of Leon is fronting a classic-rock-pop-country band who were really psyched when they heard the new Nickelback album...”. For me, this is not something someone would say about a promising new band. Quite the opposite.

I think the first song on the album, ‘Whiskey Walk’, really set the tone for the rest of the album. On top of being generally nonplussed about the song so far, before it had finished the singer belted out a “yeooow!” which, to be perfectly honest, didn’t seem to have his heart in it. I’m not sure how many people would agree with me, but that’s the sort of noise that should be saved for special occasions...like fine china. This scream, that demands both passion and balls, did not deliver.

The lyrics were not the bands strong point. Now, I’m not going to sit here and use a word like “contrived” like some white liberal-arts college guy who would say “ciao”, but I can settle for “unimaginative”. It’s not that I don’t believe this guy has ever fallen in love, but he seems to have a real issue with rehashing and sharing some of those feelings. Take the song ‘Angels’, where we are presumably hearing the story of a young lady growing up...or multiple ladies who are different ages or something. In a frenzy of emotion these women express their frustrations, as the singer relates in the chorus, saying “...angels are comin’ to save me...so take me away on your jet plane...take me around the world...’aint that what angels do?”. On top of being replete with confusion during “Angels”, the rest of the lyrics and I just did not have any chemistry.

I would make more specific references to the middle and end of the album, but to be honest it was like looking at leftover food when you are really full and it just looks unappealing.
Since my review of the album tended to be less positive than negative, I have decided to end the review on a happy note. Here are some nice things about the band American Bang:

-They have charming reviews of food and drinks on their website.
-They have two music videos and haven’t even released a full length album yet. This leads me to the conclusion that they are probably making enough money to get out of DUI charges and ride seadoos.

-In the song “Wild and Young” you can hear the singer’s southern drawl very clearly 31 seconds in, with the pronunciation of the word “door”. It is adorable.

Molice formed in January 2007 when they began playing weekly jams at Tokyo bar Kokubunji Rubber Soul, and they immediately set about crafting both their sound and image with care. In May 2007, they self-produced their first recordings, releasing them as ‘Molice Demo’. Fast-forward to August, and Molice were on stage at Japan’s biggest music festival, Summer Sonic. In September they performed a solo show (which in Japan is considered a sign of great popularity) before starting work on a series of three new demo CDs, which they released over the remains of 2007 and into the summer of 2008.

In November 2008, they released their first commercial CD, Doctor Ray, followed by a year of headline shows around Tokyo’s club scene, in places such as Shibuya, Shinjuku and Akihabara. That autumn, the music video for their track ‘Headphone’ was playlisted for repeated broadcast on French TV station NOLIFE. The band rounded out 2009 with three shows in London, England, followed in May 2010 by a show in Vietnam, at Hanoi’s CAMA Festival. Whether at home or abroad, they inject their shows with raw power and energy.

Molice’s second album, Catalystrock, was released in Japan in March 2010, and quickly found a warm reception from critics: Molice were chosen by Time Out as one of five Japanese acts primed for success in 2010, and interviews with the band graced several national and local publications. The North American version of Catalystrock will be released from Good Charamel Records (www.goodcharamel.com) on August 31st, 2010 and it include bonus tracks of “Superstar” and “Monster” (Remix).

Molice will be performing at the AWA Convention (Anime Weekend Atlanta, http://www.awa-con.com/) on September 18th. AWA is a three-day Japanese Animation and comics convention held annually in Atlanta, Georgia. Since 1995, AWA has become one of the most popular Japanese Animation conventions in the United States.

The band has also contributed two tracks to Good Charamel’s I Love J-Rock compilation, where they appear alongside Shonen Knife, LAZYgunsBRISKY and DJ Sashimi. I Love J-Rock will be released August 31.

Malibu, CA — Producer and musician Cisco Adler, best known for his work in alterna-rap duo Shwazye, is preparing to debut his new solo project. Adler recently finished work on the albums of Mike Posner, Big B, G Love and Dirt Nasty. He will be introducing previously unreleased solo music as well as some new material he has started writing for an upcoming album. Adler says to expect “hip hop to its soul, rock to its core; jazzy-reggae-folk-tronica with a little Frank Sinatra thrown in.” In other words, a little of everything.

Cisco Adler and the Pigeons will play their debut show on Saturday, August 28th at legendary Roxy Theater in Hollywood, CA, as part of the 3rd annual Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF). The festival runs from August 26th-28th and will include established headliners such as Slash, The Smashing Pumpkins, Kid Cudi, and Common. It will also serve as a platform for up-and-coming artists.

Adler recently released “The Rough Demos”—three brand new solo songs, online for free on his bandcamp page. All of the tracks feature Adler’s ever-present California sound and distinctive production style. “Body Language” has a catchy, classic vibe to it, showcasing upbeat piano and horns. “California King” invokes the laid-back, SoCal theme that Adler is proudly known for. He mellows it out with a stripped-down, acoustic alt-country love song, “Maybe Never.” The range of styles and influences continues to demonstrate Adler’s breadth as a musician.

Already a massive star in her native U.K., with one million singles sold, two No. 1 hits, and three No. 1 Airplay records to her credit, soulful pop singer and actress Pixie Lott is ready to unleash her talent Stateside this summer. Her debut U.S. single, “Boys and Girls,” is available at all digital service providers this week via Interscope Records.

The high-energy dance-pop jam “Boys and Girls” is 19-year-old Lott’s second consecutive No. 1 single in the U.K., and it’s just a taste of what’s to come when Lott releases her debut album, Turn It Up, in the U.S. in early 2011. Already certified double-platinum in the U.K., Turn It Up features Lott’s songwriting collaborations with RedOne (Lady Gaga), Greg Kurstin (Lily Allen, Sia), Toby Gad (Beyonce, Fergie, Cutfather and Jonas Jeburg (Kylie Minogue, Pussycat Dolls), and Kara DioGuardi.

In addition to releasing five singles in the U.K., Lott has scored three No. 1 Airplay tracks. She is the only U.K. or international recording artist of the last 10 years to have three debut singles hit No. 1 on the U.K. Airplay chart. She has also earned three BRIT Award nominations (including Breakthrough Artist) and a Q Award nomination, and won two MTV Europe Music Awards. This summer, Lott has appeared as support on the British leg of Rihanna’s “Last Girl on Earth” Tour.

An actress since the age of 12, Lott stars alongside Lucas Cruikshank in the feature film Fred: The Movie, based on the popular YouTube videos, which will premiere on Nickelodeon on September 17th. She has also been cast alongside Bette Midler, Adrien Brody, and Sharon Stone in the film Sweet Baby Jesus — a ’70s flashback comedy from writer Steve Blair and directed by Peter Hewitt.

Earlier this year, Billboard selected Lott as one of its 2010 “Faces to Watch.” She has also been featured in Teen Vogue, Interview, and Nylon, which called her “one of the U.K.’s most promising new pop stars.”

The Tropicaaliyah project pairs the vocals from four classic Aaliyah songs with original production (and one wholesale jacking of an Architecture in Helsinki loop) from Brooklyn's DJ Still Life. The project had its genesis in a monthly mix series, where on two separate occasions an Aaliyah vocal found an unlikely mate in a lush Tropical backing track. More than fortuitous mix pairings though, the real roots of the project are in Brooklyn's expanding global bass scene, which itself builds on the youthful re-invigoration of regional sounds happening around the world, where a melding of the traditional with the abrasive is encouraged, and the loping gait of folk dance music effortlessly meets the jagged textures of American hip-hop and R&B. This spirit of re-contextualization and playful appropriation informed the pairing, and the result is a tribute to a performer whose talent continues to unite listeners years after her untimely passing nine years ago.

DJ Still Life lives in Brooklyn and can be heard weekly on East Village Radio, where he hosts the bass and global music show Worldwide Smash Thursdays at midnight EST.

Tune in to the Late Show With David Letterman tonight (August 25th) to see a performance from The Pretty Reckless at 11:35pm ET on CBS. Taylor Momsen and her band will be rocking their US single "Make Me Wanna Die."

The track appears on their Interscope Records debut, Light Me Up, due out later this year. It's currently featured in the Season 2 trailer for the CW's Vampire Diaries.
