Since I was born in late 1988, I was a tad too young to experience all of the pivotal teen films in the nineties; my parents deemed fare like American Pie or Cruel Intentions far too raunchy, and I probably wouldn’t have sat through Dangerous Minds.

That doesn’t mean, however, that I missed their impact. I read Entertainment Weekly religiously throughout my childhood, so even if I didn’t see every single teen movie of the decade, I still knew them inside and out through interviews and reviews. And boy, was I terrified for high school — after these tales of abuse from beautiful cheerleaders, accidental (or not) murders, and getting publicly humiliated by the boy of your dreams, I thought that high school would be a minefield.

Then I went to high school and quickly educated myself on the movies I had missed out on, ultimately realizing that the world plotted by teen movies was an insular and hyperbolic one. Like my previous post about Julia Roberts rom-coms, the nineties teen movie is a unique genre that we love to watch over and over again. Here are some of my favorites:
