GRAB IT HERE!
Did you miss Afro-punk this weekend? You know, the African-American minded rock fest from which Santigold, The Noisettes and Janelle Monae sprang, and Saul Williams tends to grace each year? If so, quit beating yourself up and revel in this tasty sampler from Bad Rabbits—a freaky funk band that very simply sounds…like Prince. Want more? A compilation featuring too many excellent acts to count lives right here.
We've mentioned the dogoodery of Heaps Decent before, but just as a quick refresher: The label/charity, co-founded by Diplo, provides Australian youth with music and production workshops, often under the stewardship of a notable DJ/producer. Their latest release is "Anywhere But Here," born from a session A-Trak conducted with residents of the Riverina Juvenile Justice Centre in Wagga Wagga, NSW, where the Fool's Gold boss built a beat around a didgeridoo sample for the centre's aspiring rappers. It's raw and elemental like made-in-a-day rap should be, and there's a more contextual backstory at both A-Trak and Mad Decent's blogs. Heaps Decent are giving away the tune for free, so, if you can, donate a few dollars in return to help cause.
Carl Craig, Poseidon riding Detroit techno's second wave, lurks among good company on the remix-only bonus disc of the forthcoming Zero 7 'Best of' collection. Said to be one of Michael Jackson's favorite songs, and sung lovingly at his memorial a year ago almost exactly by his brother Jermaine, this week's Mashup Monday goes all the way back to 1936 to famed silent film comedian Charlie Chaplin's bittersweet "Smile" as sung sweetly with a jazzy twist by hip-hop/R&B/pop mashup-unto-herself Janelle Monae.

Robyn's highly anticipated Body Talk PT 1 is available today on Cherrytree Records. The album features her critically acclaimed single "Dancing On My Own" -- a heart-wrenching song that will bring a lump to your throat, and the natural successor to "With Every Heartbeat."
Body Talk Pt 1 picks up where Robyn left off in 2008, with an emphasis on sweeping, emotional dance tracks and the biting, quirky rap-pop with which she made her name. The album’s title reflects the singer’s love of dance culture, having spent three years promoting her last album in clubs across the world. It also reflects her personal intrigue with the disconnect between what your body does and what your mind wants.
At a time when the charts seem to be dominated by female solo artists, Robyn represents one of the few who is actually prepared to be an individual and let the songs do the talking. There’re no elaborate costumes, no carefully constructed image, no industry machine; instead of cultivating a pop aesthetic which will guarantee commercial returns, Robyn has spent most of the last ten years doing everything she can to find a way to be herself.
HEALTH’s “Die Slow” really flaunted the band's trademark haunted melodies over spine-breaking beats*, so we’re rather impressed with Tobacco’s transmogrifying remix in which slapping on a gritty ‘90s era balm and turning down the screws resulted in this slowish, hip-banging anthem. Ever dance underwater? Try it below. The oft-lauded Crystal Castles collaborators are dropping their next, DISCO2, on June 22 through Lovepump United.
*Personal anecdote: when I saw these dudes back in ’07 it was the first time in ten years I witnessed an actual, bloody, and sincere mosh pit both onstage and off. And then the band was so nice after the show; they gave me a free shirt from their merch table after recommending some summer reading.
