The Black Keys “Tighten Up” On Letterman

This song should be called "Get some vocal and guitar lessons" I wish someone would just walk in and smash Lil Wayne's guitar like they do in the Juicy Fruit commercials.

This has got to be the worst song ever produced in the history of music! even worst then David Hasselhoff's rap album!.

Crazy bastards!

On her Twitter this morning, M.I.A. attacked New York Times writer Lynn Hirschberg over a profile (set to appear in print this weekend but available online now) that addresses the artist's politics and upbringing in Sri Lanka. ""CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE," she Tweeted, adding Hirschberg's phone number. "ill b taking calls all day bitches." In the piece, Hirschberg implies that M.I.A. doesn't understand the complex political web of Sri Lanka and that violent videos like "Born Free," in which red-headed children are assassinated by military police, are "exploitative" and "hollow." She also addresses M.I.A.'s moving to an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood and getting married to Benjamin Bronfman, son of mogul Edward Bronfman, Jr. "What Maya wants is nearly impossible to achieve: she wants to balance outrageous political statements with a luxe lifestyle; to be supersuccessful yet remain controversial," Hirschberg wrote.

Rolling Stone contributing editor Jenny Eliscu was with M.I.A. in London around the same time as Hirschberg, reporting a story for the magazine in an upcoming issue. Eliscu talked extensively to the singer about the personal basis for her political beliefs. "If I want to be really political, I’d have to sit down and study you know," M.I.A. told Eliscu. "But I feel like my approach to politics is [that] I never said I’m smart and I read this and I’m making assumptions. But why aren’t I allowed to write about my experience? Why can’t I say, 'Oh my God, my school got shot by the government? I can’t say that, yet they can do it. But I want to be able to still say it somewhere. There needs to be some sort of an outlet for people like me."

The UK’s finest disco operators, Horse Meat Disco, return with another killer album of tried and tested underground disco, Italo and rarities that have been rocking crowds from their base in Vauxhall, London, to dancefloors worldwide during 2009-10.

Since their acclaimed debut compilation on Strut in 2009, residents James Hillard, Jim Stanton, Severino and Luke Howard (aka Filthy Luka) have continued to lead the way with their packed residencies at The Eagle, London, Lux in Lisbon, Tape in Berlin and Cihan in Istanbul. During 2010, as well as revisiting UK festivals like Glastonbury, Lovebox and T In The Park, they will be spreading the disco love to some of the world’s leading festivals including Fuji Rocks (Japan), Calvi On The Rocks (Corsica) and Lollapalooza in the U.S.

Horse Meat Disco Volume 2 brings together another essential selection of New York classics alongside a host of lesser known discoveries for all fans of underground disco. Anthems include Zanzibar favourite "You Can Get Over" by Stephanie Mills, Italo staple "Walkman" by Kasso and Rinder & Lewis’ "Afrodesia" under their El Coco pseudonym. Rarities include "I’m Not In Love (Girl You’re In Love)" by Freda Payne’s sister Scherrie, "Cherchez Pas" by Swedish model-turned-singer Madleen Kane and Italo oddity "Touch Me Now" by Bravo.

The CD is mixed by Horse Meat Disco DJs with the unmixed tracks available to download. Also available as unmixed 2LP set and digital. The package features a selection of photos taken at Horse Meat’s events worldwide during this year, exclusive sleeve notes by journalist Paul Flynn and select quotes from some of the A-list DJs that guest regularly at the club.

Major Lazer + La Roux - Magic ( Falling Soldiers Dub) by ataricoolkids
MAJOR LAZER JOINS FORCES WITH LA ROUX TO PRESENT LAZERPROOF MIXTAPE!
The ubiquitous electro-dancehall duo Major Lazer has partnered with English synthpop outfit La Roux to create Lazerproof, a mixtape to be released for free on Wednesday, May 26th from Mad Decent!

On their self-titled debut from Cherrytree / Interscope, La Roux front-woman Elly Jackson channels her new wave and pop influences and projects them onto a backdrop of intricate electronic musings co-produced by Ben Langmaid. Major Lazer's brain-trust (Diplo and Switch), partner with them to bring the newest mixtape that was put together while on a recent trip to Jamaica.

Lazerproof plays on both groups' styles and the result is a project that is only vaguely recognizable as the sum of its parts- ska, dubstep, hip-hop and pop stars aligning to create a synth-Britania meets dubstep dancehall gem. Guest appearances from Gucci Mane, Drake, Gyptian, Rusko and Amanda Blank add the infamous Mad Decent touch.

War Tapes had an altruistic vision for this new EP, Turtles: to generously donate the holiday proceeds to charity to fight animal cruelty. They entered the studio planning to record acoustic versions of songs released on their doom-pop debut The Continental Divide. One month later, the Turtles EP had evolved into far more an experimental musical undertaking than originally planned.

Syracuse NY’s most internationally beloved export Ra Ra Riot will issue its second full length album, The Orchard, on August 24th in the U.S. via Barsuk Records.
Produced by Ra Ra Riot and Andrew Maury and mixed by Chris Walla (with one assist from Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij), The Orchard is 10 more stunning offerings of the bittersweet and endearing Ra Ra Riot blend that Entertainment Weekly likened to “Unforgettable Fire-era U2.”
The Orchard follows up Ra Ra Riot’s debut album, The Rhumb Line, which was released two years earlier (almost to the day) and immediately hailed as “a blissful chamber-pop breakthrough” in a 4-star Rolling Stone review (who named it the #38 album of 2008). Time Out New York touted it as “classically pretty, but without getting all fussy about it.” The Rhumb Line debuted at #109 on the U.S. album chart and went on to sell in excess of 60,000 copies as the band’s live draw grew exponentially.
Ra Ra Riot is vocalist Wes Miles, bassist Mathieu Santos, guitarist Milo Bonacci, violinist Rebecca Zeller and cellist Alexandra Lawn. The Orchard marks the band’s first time being joined in the studio by drummer Gabriel Duquette, who has toured with the band since the release of The Rhumb Line.

The Orchard’s full track listing is:
1. The Orchard
2. Boy
3. Too Dramatic
4. Foolish
5. Massachusetts
6. You and I Know

Although initially the solo project of Sindri Mr Sigfsson, Seabear had morphed into a seven-piece band by 2007, when the group made its full-length debut with Ghost That Carried Us Away. Sigfsson filled his lineup with a number of fellow Icelandic songwriters -- Gudbjrg Hlin Gudmundsdottir, Ingibjrg Birgisdttir, Halldr Ragnarsson, rn Ingi gstsson, Kjartan Bragi Bjarnason, and Sley Stefnsdttir -- and the group's hushed, folksy music began finding an international audience in 2008, when the song Cat Piano was featured in an episode of Gossip Girl. Although Sigfsson also devoted time to his own solo work (which he released under the alias Sin Fang Bous), Seabear continued gathering momentum during the following years, and 2010 found the group launching its first American tour and releasing its second album, We Built a Fire. - all music guide

Walter Gibbons remains one of the most important and unheralded DJ / remixers in New York dance music history, a pioneer of reel to reel edits and the art of the remix and a tangible link between early hip hop and disco through his quickfire turntable skills developed during the mid-‘70s.

At his famed residency at Galaxy 21 (alongside a then young percussionist, Francois Kevorkian), Gibbons perfected his turntable prowess, mixing two copies of records seamlessly at a similar time to Kool Herc’s famed block parties across town in the Bronx in 1975. He was among the first to make his own reel to reel edits of tracks, extending breaks and restructuring tracks specifically for the dancefloor. As a direct result, he was the first DJ to be granted access to multi-track tapes as Ken Cayre’s Salsoul Records brought him in to re-work Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ in ‘76, a mix that would set the blueprint for disco, the 12” format and all future dance music mixes.
Tracklist:

1. JAKKI – SUN… SUN… SUN… (Walter Gibbons Original 12” Edit)
2. DOUBLE EXPOSURE – TEN PERCENT (Walter Gibbons 12“ mix)

6. SANDY MERCER – YOU ARE MY LOVE (12" version)
7. BETTYE LAVETTE – DOIN’ THE BEST THAT I CAN (Walter Gibbons 12“ mix)

Swedish post-hardcore/indie band DISCO ENSEMBLE returns with their fourth studio full length album The Island of Disco Ensemble set to hit stores on June 1st.

After having three previous albums that saw commercial success (Viper Ethics in 2003, First Aid Kit in 2005 and Magic Recoveries in 2008), Miikka Koivisto (Vocals), Jussi Ylikoski (Guitar), Mikko Hakila (Drums), and Lasse Lindfors (Bass) created a fourth album that promises to be there most adventurous.

Recorded in a smorgasbord of different studios in the bands native Finland, Disco Ensemble spent time in Petrax studios in Hollola, Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki and Fried studios in Helsinki. The man behind mixing board of the bands fourth and most mature work is producer/songwriter/radio-journalist Lasse Kurki.

Vocalist Miikka Koivisto on the new album, "The Island of Disco Ensemble couldn't have been born in any other time in history than now. The Island of Disco Ensemble is more consistent and accessible but at the same time more uncompromising and unique than our previous records."

Drummer Mikko Hakila adds: "This album is a natural follow-up to our previous albums. If Viper Ethics was first-album-excitement, First Aid Kit was more mature and Magic Recoveries was stretching the band's limits, then this one is a combination of all of that."

The album will be available as a CD, download and vinyl, and a limited edition book & CD package. Disco Ensemble is in the midst of a European tour and just released the first single from the new album, titled “White Flag for Peace.” Check it out now.

It’s under three weeks until Suckers unleash Wild Smile on the universe via Frenchkiss Records, and Spinner just premiered a second track from the band’s long-awaited debut today. Like lead single “Black Sheep” and Suckers’ remix of Local Natives’ “Wide Eyes,” the grooving new ballad “A Mind I Knew” continues to carry the listener on an indie safari of swinging beats, driving percussion and heady vocals. “A Mind I Knew” is a bittersweet anthem that climbs to a resonating crescendo, offering yet another taste of the weirdo-pop pathos this Brooklyn crew crams into the cartwheeling, caterwauling Wild Smile.

1- Highly regional and somewhat seminal indie rock label Eskimo Kiss Records will be closing their doors after ten years of releasing records for DIY acts like The Good Graces, Citified, North Elementary and Gregg Yeti. “Let’s Do Art and Be Best Friends,” the label’s final release, serves as a best-of retrospective as well as offering eight rare/unreleased bonus tracks. The record will be available for purchase online (ITunes, eMusic, Amazon, etc.) in stores, and direct from Eskimo Kiss on June 15th .

2 - The Waylons are a four-piece band based in Brooklyn, NY that often doesn’t know what to wear for shows, they don't have tattoos, and aren’t so hot at accessorizing but they do have a girl drummer who curses when she drives a car. The now-Brooklynites hail from all over the country – Vermont, Washington, Pennsylvania, and Illinois – but they’ve adapted well to their new home where they concentrate on writing, recording and performing songs that delight and last.

They have been described as indie, alt-folk, alt-country, Americana, and Brit-influenced pop and have been aptly compared to such diverse voices as Pavement, Simon and Garfunkel, The Replacements, Willie Nelson, Okkervil River,
and the Shins. There are three songwriters in the band, and all four members sing. While guitars, bass and drums lay the foundation to the music, pianos, organ, clarinet, accordian, cello, and tambourines also make appearances in contributing the group’s lush sound. The Waylons’ music has been praised for the level of craft in the songwriting as well as arrangement of the music – both live and in recordings. The Waylons make music you will like in five minutes and love in five years. I can email you their new EP “Out of Love” to test that theory, if you would like.

DIPLO TO RELEASE DIRECTORIAL FILM DEBUT, "FAVELA ON BLAST"
DVD AND DIGITAL RELEASE COMING ON MAD DECENT JULY 20th

Favela on Blast, the directorial film debut from Grammy-nominated DJ and producer, Diplo, and his partner Leandro HBL, documents a vibrant and innovative musical subculture that has emerged in Brazil's impoverished slums, known as favelas. Well beneath the radar of mainstream society for the last 20 years, they have their own language, style and heroes. Their music and culture have gone mostly unnoticed outside of South America until now. Favela on Blast captures the rarely seen stories of MC's, DJ's, dancers, and cultural producers through the eyes of Diplo and Brazilian filmmaker Leandro HBL, with memorable appearances from funk superstars Deize, Tigrona, Mr. Catra, and Duda Do Borell.

Favela on Blast documents the culture surrounding "Funk Carioca," a musical rhythm that mixes the American electronic funk of the 1980's with the most diverse influences of Brazilian music. It is one of the most interesting musical movements in the world and it comes from one of the most violent and poorest places too: the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Bombastic rhythms coming from the Miami Bass and loops and samples are united to powerful rap vocals using Brazilian slang. This music is designed to be listened to as loud as possible and with high bass pumping through the tropical nights of Rio. The heroes are the creators- the musicians. Their pace is set between colossal street parties; propped with rudimentary sound-systems, warring drug factions, and an eerily tense city where the Police and societies elite have the upper hand until it comes to their musical culture, always Brazil's heart and nation's identity.
